How Adoption Matching Works
Adoption matching through Cats in the City Rescue is not based only on availability or first interest. We evaluate the relationship between the cat, the environment, the adopter, the household structure, and the long-term sustainability of the placement.
The goal is not simply to complete an adoption. The goal is to help the cat land safely in a home where their needs can realistically be understood and supported over time.
What We Evaluate During Adoption Matching
Every cat enters placement with a different nervous system, behavioral history, environmental tolerance, and support need. Some cats adapt quickly. Others need careful pacing, low stimulation, or structured decompression.
Many Failed Adoptions Are Actually Failed Matches
A fearful cat placed into a loud home may shut down further. A medically complex cat placed with an unprepared adopter may become overwhelming. A sensitive cat introduced too quickly may appear “behavioral” when they are actually dysregulated.
Many cats are not failing because they are unlovable or “bad.” They are failing because the placement did not account for the cat’s actual support needs.
The Adoption Process
Adoption Is a Transition Process
Cats do not instantly understand that they are “home.” They experience relocation through stress physiology, sensory change, environmental uncertainty, and nervous-system adaptation.
Our process is designed to help adopters understand that transition takes time, pacing, observation, and support — especially for sensitive, senior, medical, or behaviorally complex cats.
