What the TANDEM Cat® Matting Severity Scale Service Is

The TANDEM Cat® Matting Severity Scale Service is a hands-on feline grooming and coat assessment service provided by trained TANDEM Cat® staff at Cats in the City grooming and care facilities. During the service, a provider evaluates the cat’s coat, skin, comfort, movement, and tolerance to handling, then classifies the cat’s coat condition using the TANDEM Cat® Matting Severity Scale.

The service helps determine the urgency, scope, and safest method of grooming care. It is used to support informed grooming decisions, guardian communication, care planning, and documentation of coat condition over time.

How the Service Works

During the appointment, a trained provider performs an in-person examination of the cat’s coat and skin. This includes parting the fur, assessing coat density and resistance, identifying compaction or mat formation, and observing the cat’s comfort, mobility, and response to handling.

Based on these findings, the provider assigns a matting severity level. That level helps guide the grooming intervention, including whether the cat needs maintenance grooming, coat recovery, a Total Reset, or additional care planning.

Who the Service Is For

This service is intended for domestic cats of all coat types, especially cats with reduced grooming ability, coat compaction, visible matting, aging-related coat changes, mobility limitations, medical burden, or behavioral barriers to self-maintenance.

It is appropriate for cats presented for grooming, supportive coat care, coat recovery, and structured care planning when accurate description of coat condition is important.

How the Service Is Delivered

The service is delivered in person as part of a structured feline coat and skin assessment performed by trained staff at TANDEM Cat® grooming and care facilities operated by Cats in the City.

The assigned level is documented in the cat’s care record and communicated to the guardian using consistent terminology. When relevant, the assessment may also support coordination with veterinary professionals.

Level 0 — No Matting

Definition: Healthy, free-moving coat

Indicators: Fur parts easily; lies flat without resistance or tackiness

Functional Impact: Normal movement, grooming, and comfort

Level 1 — Mild Compaction

Definition: Early structural change in the coat

Indicators: Fur feels dense or thick; slight tackiness or drag in friction zones

Functional Impact: May resist brushing; discomfort during movement or handling; early warning zone

Level 2 — Moderate Matting

Definition: Widespread interlinking; mats forming

Indicators: Medium-sized mats in groin, flanks, belly, or friction zones; brushing meets resistance

Functional Impact: Grooming impaired; skin may be irritated; coat no longer self-regulates well

Level 3 — Severe Matting

Definition: Compaction across multiple zones

Indicators: Large felted mats; skin pulled tight; coat warm, waxy, greasy, or immobile

Functional Impact: Restricted movement; flinching or vocalization during touch; ongoing pain likely

Level 4 — Systemic Matting

Definition: Body-wide coat failure

Indicators: Mats chained together; skin injury; scabs, sores, disfigurement, odor, or full coat immobility

Functional Impact: Significant mobility loss; shutdown; loss of grooming, play, or normal self-maintenance

Why Coat Assessment Matters Before Grooming

Hair compaction is the underlying mechanism in all matting. It often begins before large visible mats form and can progress into coat immobility, heat retention, skin tension, and functional impairment.

The TANDEM Cat® Matting Severity Scale Service identifies that progression during a hands-on grooming assessment so the intervention can be matched to the cat’s actual condition rather than appearance alone.

How the Service Supports Grooming Care

  • Classifies feline coat condition using standardized matting severity levels
  • Determines urgency and scope of grooming intervention
  • Guides hands-on grooming decisions and care planning
  • Provides clear, neutral language for guardian communication
  • Documents changes in coat condition over time
  • Supports alignment between grooming staff, guardians, and veterinary care teams when relevant

Important Clarification

The TANDEM Cat® Matting Severity Scale Service is an in-person feline grooming and coat assessment service. It is used within grooming and supportive care to standardize coat evaluation, classify matting severity, and guide intervention planning. It is not offered as a standalone veterinary diagnosis or remote assessment tool.
