In real life, most cats need grooming because coat burden turns into discomfort: undercoat compaction, mats that pull with every movement, hygiene breakdown, and senior cats who can’t keep up with self-care. We provide structured, trauma-informed grooming using the **TANDEM Cat® method** — designed for cats, paced to the nervous system, and built around [natural body positioning](https://catsinthecity.com/natural-body-position-cat-grooming/). Our goal is comfort, function, and skin safety — not forcing a “perfect” finish. Behavior-first grooming ## Behavior-First Means Every Cat Is Seen If you’re searching for **cat grooming in Portland Powell**, you’re not looking for a standard groom. You’re looking for a place that can handle real coat needs and real nervous systems safely. TANDEM Cat® is a structured, trauma-informed clinical grooming system. Some cats need time and space. Others need movement, grounding, or micro-breaks. We adapt to the cat so grooming becomes tolerable and repeatable, not a one-time ordeal. - **We start with coping style:** how your cat processes touch, sound, and restraint. - **We pace to the threshold:** short cycles, breaks, and de-escalation before stress spikes. - **We protect the body:** joint-supportive positioning and gentle, cat-specific handling. - **We match the intervention:** deshedding, dematting, hygiene support, or a reset based on what’s safest today. We groom all cats. But we never treat them the same. Many cats look fine while the undercoat compacts into a dense layer against the skin. Others develop small mats that tighten slowly over months until movement becomes restricted. ![Pile of undercoat removed during structured deshedding at Cats in the City Powell](https://catsinthecity.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/feline-undercoat-hair-removed-portland-cat-grooming-scaled.jpeg) ### Undercoat Compaction Excess shedding is often trapped shedding. When loose hair can’t release, it becomes friction tangles, hairballs, heat retention, and the base layer for matting. ![Skin irritation and hair thinning revealed under tight matting after removal](https://catsinthecity.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/cat-skin-irritation-under-matted-fur--scaled.jpg) ### Matting Hides Skin Problems Tight mats can conceal irritation, hair thinning, moisture dermatitis, pressure points, or friction injuries. Releasing mats is access to the skin and relief from constant pull.
