TANDEM Grooming Is for All Cats

At Cats in the City, “all cats” is not a slogan. It is a clinical care position.

TANDEM Cat® grooming is designed to adapt to the individual cat’s nervous system, body condition, coat burden, medical context, and tolerance for handling. We do not expect cats to fit a standardized grooming experience. We redesign the grooming experience around the cat.

That includes the mellow cats, the fearful cats, the first-timers, the seniors, the medically complicated cats, and the cats who have not done well elsewhere. Grooming access should not be limited to the easiest patients.

Core clinical position
We build grooming around the cat’s body, stress signals, and tolerance windows—not around speed, stillness, or force.

Handling, pacing, and environment are adjusted to match the cat—not the schedule.
Who this includes

Yes, This Includes Your Cat

“All cats” includes both straightforward and high-complexity presentations. The goal is not to separate cats into worthy and unworthy grooming candidates. The goal is to determine what kind of care structure each cat needs in order to receive grooming as safely as possible.

  • Regulated cats: who benefit from skilled coat care, nail trims, and hygiene support
  • High-boundary cats: who require restraint-light handling and precise pacing
  • First-time cats: whose first grooming experience should build future tolerance, not fear
  • Senior cats: who may have reduced mobility, arthritis, hygiene decline, or coat maintenance problems
  • Medically complex cats: who require observation-informed handling and coordinated decision-making

Important scope note

We do not diagnose disease. We observe what the cat’s body is showing, adapt our grooming approach accordingly, and flag findings that should be evaluated by a veterinarian.

What changes in practice

What Changes When the Cat Changes

The underlying method stays consistent, but the application changes based on the cat in front of us. We do not use one fixed handling pattern for every patient.

Handling: natural body positioning and full-body support reduce torque, instability, and defensive escalation
Pacing: work is segmented according to tolerance instead of pushed past threshold
Environment: quieter, lower-stimulation grooming rooms reduce startle load
Sequencing: harder tasks are performed inside the cat’s best available window
Decision logic: when a cat rises out of scope, we downshift, stage, defer, or refer

This is not about doing less. It is about delivering the right amount of grooming through the safest available structure.

Why this matters

Why Grooming Functions as Health Support

Cats often mask discomfort until a problem is advanced. Grooming creates one of the few repeated opportunities for direct, hands-on observation of coat, skin, nails, hygiene, mobility, and tolerance for touch.

  • Coat mobility: helping prevent restriction, pulling, and loss of comfort
  • Hygiene support: especially important for seniors and cats with reduced self-maintenance
  • Paw care: identifying overgrowth and early embedded claw risk
  • Skin and coat observation: catching buildup, irritation, and inflammatory change earlier
  • Behavioral stability: building tolerance over time instead of reinforcing defensive fear cycles
The goal is not a “perfect” cat. The goal is a cat who can receive necessary care with more support, less escalation, and better long-term tolerance.

Support Protects the Present and the Future

All Cats Means Care Is Adapted, Not Assumed

At Cats in the City, we do not define grooming success by whether a cat can be rushed through a standardized routine.

We define it by whether grooming can be delivered through support, regulation, and clinically informed adaptation to the cat in front of us.

TANDEM Cat® grooming is for all cats because the method changes when the cat changes.

The TANDEM Grooming Difference: All Cats Welcome

TANDEM Cat® Grooming was designed to make safe, skilled grooming available to all cats—not just the “easy ones.” But here’s what most people don’t realize:

Even the “easy” cats deserve a system that works in their favor.

Routine Care. Regulated Structure.

Wellness grooming isn’t just about keeping a cat clean—it’s about creating rhythm, reducing stress, and preventing problems before they start.

Our routine care services include:

No loud dryers. No rushed sessions. No forced restraint.
Just skilled, co-regulated care delivered by a certified team who understands cats—inside and out.

Behavior-First Means Every Cat is Seen

TANDEM Cat® is not a one-size-fits-all method—it’s a structured, trauma-informed clinical system that adjusts to your cat’s temperament, age, history, and needs. Some cats need time and space. Others need movement and grounding.
We know the difference.

That’s why we say:
We groom all cats. But we never treat them the same.

What Guardians Say

Our cat doesn’t have any medical issues—he’s just fluffy. But we keep coming back because the way they care for him is different. It’s not rushed, and they respect his little moods.
