Why We Focus on Fit, Not Speed
Many rescue systems are forced to prioritize movement speed because intake pressure is overwhelming. But speed alone does not necessarily create safe or durable placements.
At Cats in the City Rescue, we focus on placement fit because many failed adoptions are not failures of love — they are failures of environmental compatibility, pacing, support, or nervous-system mismatch.
Some Cats Need More Thoughtful Placement
Sensitive cats, senior cats, medically complex cats, fearful cats, overstimulated cats, and shutdown cats often struggle in environments that move too quickly or fail to account for their support needs.
A placement may technically “work” on paper while still overwhelming the cat emotionally, behaviorally, or physiologically.
Fit Involves More Than Availability
Slower Placement Does Not Mean Less Commitment
Sometimes people worry that a slower placement process means rescue organizations are being overly selective or difficult.
In reality, slowing the process down often protects both the adopter and the cat from preventable stress, mismatch, and heartbreak later.
Some cats settle quickly. Others require pacing, decompression, environmental predictability, or careful introductions before their personality fully emerges.
Durable Placements Protect Cats
Every failed placement increases stress load, transition fatigue, nervous-system dysregulation, and environmental instability for a cat.
By focusing on fit first, we aim to reduce repeated disruption and help cats land in homes where they can safely stabilize, decompress, and remain long term.
