What Is TANDEM Touch™?
A trauma-informed feline handling framework that views touch as communication rather than restraint.
Most handling systems begin with a simple goal: How do we safely complete the procedure?
TANDEM Touch™ begins with a different question: What is the cat experiencing right now?
A Different Way of Understanding Feline Handling
This distinction may seem subtle, but it changes everything.
TANDEM Touch™ teaches professionals to recognize, interpret, and respond to what cats communicate through their bodies, behavior, posture, and responses to touch.
Why TANDEM Touch™ Was Developed
Over thousands of feline grooming, boarding, rehabilitation, and FELINE TRANSITIONS® cases, a pattern became increasingly clear. Many handling challenges were not actually handling problems. They were communication problems.
Cats were communicating fear, pain, confusion, stress, sensory overwhelm, and loss of trust. Yet these messages were often misunderstood as resistance, stubbornness, aggression, or noncompliance.
As pressure increased, fear increased. As fear increased, behavior escalated. What appeared to be a difficult cat was often a cat whose communication had gone unrecognized.
The Core Idea Behind TANDEM Touch™
At its foundation, TANDEM Touch™ is based on a simple principle: Every touch communicates something.
TANDEM Touch™ teaches professionals to become aware of the messages they are sending and the messages cats are sending in return.
Touch as Communication
Most people think of touch as something that is done to a cat. TANDEM Touch™ views touch differently. Touch becomes a form of information exchange.
Information From the Cat
Muscle tone, body positioning, weight shifting, tension patterns, movement responses, and behavioral changes.
Information From the Handler
Pressure, positioning, contact patterns, timing, and predictability.
Moving Beyond Restraint
Safety remains essential. There are situations where physical control is necessary. However, TANDEM Touch™ does not begin with restraint. It begins with observation.
Understanding Regulation
One of the central concepts within TANDEM Touch™ is regulation. A regulated cat is not necessarily a calm cat. A regulated cat is a cat whose nervous system remains capable of adapting to the situation without becoming overwhelmed.
When regulation decreases, behavior changes. The cat may freeze, hide, withdraw, escape, vocalize, swat, bite, or shut down.
Trauma-Informed Foundations
TANDEM Touch™ is rooted in trauma-informed care. This means recognizing that behavior is often influenced by previous experiences, fear, pain, and accumulated stress.
Rather than asking, “How do I make this cat cooperate?” the trauma-informed question becomes: What might this cat be communicating through this behavior?
Clinical Observation as a Core Skill
Observation sits at the center of the TANDEM Touch™ framework. These observations often provide critical information before overt behavioral events occur.

The framework integrates trauma-informed care, behavioral observation, nervous system regulation, trust building, clinical awareness, and communication through touch.
Is TANDEM Touch™ a Certification Program?
TANDEM Touch™ principles are taught through TANDEM Cat® professional training programs, including both foundational and advanced immersive courses.
TANDEM Touch™ in Professional Cat Grooming
TANDEM Touch™ also supports a broader ethical framework for professional feline grooming. Cats are not small dogs, and high-complexity feline grooming requires observation, team-based judgment, trauma-informed handling, and respect for the cat’s physical and emotional limits.

It recognizes that every interaction influences future trust, future cooperation, and future wellbeing.
When professionals learn to interpret behavior, understand regulation, and communicate intentionally through touch, handling becomes more than a technical skill. It becomes a form of relationship-building.
Because every cat is communicating. TANDEM Touch™ is the practice of learning how to listen.
