Cats in the City Rescue • Guardian Stabilization Program

Temporary Cat Care During Crisis

Many guardians do not want to surrender their cats. They are trying to survive a temporary collapse: hospitalization, housing instability, divorce, caregiver burnout, mental health crisis, financial disruption, surgery recovery, relocation, or sudden life destabilization.

FELINE TRANSITIONS® recognizes that temporary support can sometimes prevent permanent separation.

Core philosophy

Crisis Does Not Always Mean Permanent Surrender

Some guardians need time, structure, support, and stabilization — not judgment, panic, or immediate separation from their cat.

Why this exists

The Space Between Stability and Surrender Is Often Overlooked

Traditional rescue systems are often designed around intake after collapse has already occurred.

But many families begin struggling long before they are emotionally ready to permanently give up their cat. The situation may feel unsustainable, but still potentially reversible with enough support.

Temporary stabilization can sometimes prevent permanent loss.

Our role is to evaluate whether temporary support, structured care, transition planning, or crisis stabilization may allow the cat and guardian to safely reconnect once the immediate disruption passes.

Temporary support may include

Possible Stabilization Pathways

Short-term or extended temporary housing support
Medical-aware boarding and medication support
Behavioral stabilization and decompression care
Structured communication and transition planning
Support during hospitalization, relocation, divorce, or recovery periods
Assessment of whether reunification or rehoming is safest long-term
Common situations

Families Often Reach Out During:

Medical hospitalization or surgery recovery
Housing instability or emergency relocation
Divorce, separation, or family restructuring
Caregiver burnout or emotional collapse
Temporary inability to provide medical or behavioral care
Situations where surrender feels imminent but uncertain

Support Systems Around Cats Matter

Many surrender situations are not caused by lack of love. They are caused by overload, instability, exhaustion, illness, or collapse inside the human system surrounding the cat.

Temporary care exists to create breathing room — enough space for thoughtful decisions, safer transitions, and better long-term outcomes whenever possible.
