Cats in the City | TANDEM Touch™ Coat Decompression

HydroFriction™

Water-mediated coat decompression for cats.

HydroFriction™ is a TANDEM Touch™ coat decompression modality used by Cats in the City and TANDEM Cat® Clinical Grooming to soften, separate, and release trapped undercoat through warm water, precision handling, and controlled friction.

For many cats, the problem is not simply loose hair on the surface. The problem is undercoat that has become trapped, compacted, sticky, greasy, or compressed beneath the visible coat.

When the coat needs more than brushing

Some coat conditions cannot be resolved with dry brushing alone.

When shed undercoat remains trapped inside the coat, it can begin to bind with surrounding hair. Over time, the coat may feel dense, heavy, oily, sticky, clumpy, or difficult to comb through.

Guardians may notice excessive shedding, frequent hairballs, greasy coat texture, repeated small mats, reduced self-grooming, or a coat that feels thick no matter how much brushing is done.

These signs may indicate coat compression.
What is HydroFriction™?

A water-mediated release technique for compacted undercoat.

HydroFriction™ uses warm water and specialized handling to help loosen compacted undercoat. Water helps soften the coat, reduce resistance, and create movement between layers of trapped hair.

Once the coat is properly hydrated, controlled friction techniques are used to separate and release accumulated undercoat more safely and effectively.

The goal is not to scrub the cat. The goal is to use water, touch, timing, and technique to restore coat function.

How HydroFriction™ works

Each session is adjusted to the individual cat.

HydroFriction™ may include:

Warm water coat hydration
Gentle coat saturation
Precision friction techniques
Undercoat softening and separation
Manual release of trapped coat
Rinsing to remove loosened debris, dander, and shed hair
Follow-up drying and coat expansion
AirFriction™ support when appropriate

Each session is adapted to the cat’s coat type, age, tolerance, skin sensitivity, and clinical presentation.

Why water matters

Water changes the coat.

In compressed coats, trapped hair can become resistant to dry release. Warm water can help soften the structure of the coat, loosen buildup, reduce static, and allow compacted hair to separate more effectively.

HydroFriction™ can be especially helpful for cats with dense undercoat, long hair, seasonal coat buildup, greasy coat texture, fine hair that packs tightly, senior coat changes, or a coat that has stopped self-maintaining.

HydroFriction™ allows the coat to open, move, and release in a way that brushing alone often cannot achieve.
Not an ordinary bath

HydroFriction™ focuses on release, not just cleaning.

A standard bath focuses on cleaning the coat. HydroFriction™ focuses on releasing trapped coat burden.

While the coat is cleaned during the process, the purpose is deeper than hygiene. HydroFriction™ is used to restore movement, airflow, separation, and comfort within the coat.

The same water that simply washes one cat may help decompress another cat’s coat when applied with the correct sequence, pressure, pacing, and release method.

Benefits

What HydroFriction™ may help support.

Reduced Shedding

By removing trapped undercoat, less loose hair remains available to shed throughout the home.

Fewer Hairballs

When excess loose hair is removed before the cat ingests it during grooming, hairball frequency may decrease.

Improved Coat Airflow

Releasing dense undercoat allows air to move more freely through the coat and toward the skin.

Better Skin Environment

Removing trapped coat, debris, dander, and buildup can help improve the skin environment.

Reduced Matting Risk

When trapped undercoat is released early, the coat is less likely to progress into mats or pelting.

Improved Comfort

A decompressed coat can feel lighter, looser, and easier for the cat to move within.

Who benefits?

HydroFriction™ is often most useful before visible matting becomes severe.

Long-haired cats
Double-coated cats
Senior cats
Cats with thick seasonal shedding
Cats with greasy or sticky coat texture
Cats prone to hairballs
Cats with recurring mats
Cats whose coats feel dense, heavy, or compressed
Cats who cannot maintain their coat effectively on their own

Many cats who benefit from HydroFriction™ are not visibly matted. That is often the ideal time to intervene.

How HydroFriction™ fits into Coat Decompression™

One TANDEM Touch™ modality within a larger coat health system.

HydroFriction™ is one modality within TANDEM Cat® Coat Decompression™. Depending on your cat’s needs, it may be combined with DryFriction™ and AirFriction™.

DryFriction™

Manual dry release.

Used for precision undercoat separation and early-stage coat compression.

HydroFriction™

Water-mediated release.

Used when warm water can help soften, separate, and release trapped undercoat.

AirFriction™

Air-assisted release.

Used to lift, expand, and remove loosened undercoat after release.

Together, these TANDEM Touch™ modalities allow our team to adapt the session to the cat rather than forcing every coat into the same grooming process.

Ready to schedule?

Water-mediated support for trapped coat burden.

HydroFriction™ may be recommended when your cat’s coat needs water-mediated release to reduce trapped undercoat, improve comfort, and restore coat function.
