TANDEM Cat® Coat Decompression™

Less shed. More comfort.

Your cat’s coat is constantly growing, shedding, shifting, and renewing itself. When loose undercoat cannot properly release, it begins to accumulate within the coat itself. Over time, the coat becomes heavier, denser, and more compressed.

Many guardians notice increased shedding, more hairballs, clumps forming in the coat, or a cat that seems less interested in grooming. What they often do not realize is that these changes may all stem from the same underlying issue: coat compression.

Coat compression

When shed hair becomes trapped instead of leaving the body.

Coat compression occurs when shed hair becomes trapped within the coat rather than releasing naturally. As trapped undercoat accumulates, neighboring hairs begin to bind together. Airflow decreases. Skin movement becomes restricted. Grooming becomes more difficult.

The result is a coat that feels heavier, denser, and harder to manage.

Left unresolved, coat compression can progress into matting, pelting, skin irritation, increased hairball production, and reduced comfort.
What is Coat Decompression™?

A specialized service for trapped undercoat release.

TANDEM Cat® Coat Decompression™ is a specialized service designed to gently release trapped undercoat before it becomes a larger problem.

Rather than focusing solely on appearance, Coat Decompression™ focuses on restoring coat function. The goal is to help the coat return to a healthier, more self-maintaining state by reducing accumulated undercoat and restoring normal coat movement.

Many cats leave feeling noticeably lighter, more flexible, and more comfortable.

Hairball Coat Decompression graphic
Hairball Coat Decompression™ supports comfort by reducing excess shed hair before it becomes a recurring coat and digestive burden.
Why it matters

Excess trapped undercoat affects more than appearance.

Coat Decompression™ helps address the functional burden created when loose undercoat remains trapped inside the coat.

Increased shedding throughout the home
Frequent hairballs
Coat clumping and tangling
Reduced airflow to the skin
Skin irritation
Difficulty self-grooming
Increased mat formation
Reduced comfort during movement

By addressing coat compression early, many of these issues can be reduced before they become significant problems.

TANDEM Touch™ modalities

Three coat decompression approaches with one goal: your cat’s comfort.

Every coat is different. For that reason, TANDEM Cat® utilizes multiple coat decompression techniques depending on coat type, coat density, skin sensitivity, and the cat’s individual needs.

DryFriction™

Manual coat release.

Specialized friction techniques designed to separate and remove trapped undercoat while maintaining comfort.

Best for localized coat compression, sensitive cats, early-stage coat buildup, and precision coat work.

HydroFriction™

Water-mediated release.

Warm water, specialized bathing protocols, and friction-assisted release techniques help soften, separate, and release trapped undercoat.

Best for dense undercoat accumulation, heavy seasonal shedding, long-haired coats, and significant coat compression.

AirFriction™

Air-assisted release.

Controlled airflow separates, lifts, and removes loosened undercoat after release.

Best for thick double coats, coat expansion, undercoat extraction, and finishing decompression work.

These modalities are frequently combined during a single session based on the needs of the individual cat.

Benefits

Less shed. More comfort. Better coat function.

Less Shedding

Removing trapped undercoat reduces the amount of loose hair left to shed throughout your home.

Fewer Hairballs

When cats ingest less loose hair during grooming, hairball production may be reduced.

Improved Coat Function

Coats can move more freely, groom more effectively, and maintain themselves more easily.

Increased Comfort

Reducing coat burden may improve flexibility, mobility, and overall comfort.

Better Skin Environment

Improved airflow and reduced accumulation can help support healthier skin conditions.

Earlier Prevention

The best mat removal is often the one that never becomes necessary.

Professional Coat Decompression™ helps reduce trapped shed hair before it becomes a comfort, grooming, or hairball problem.
Is your cat a candidate?

Coat Decompression™ is often most valuable before visible matting appears.

Coat Decompression™ may be beneficial if your cat:

Produces frequent hairballs
Sheds excessively
Has a coat that feels dense or heavy
Develops small mats repeatedly
Has difficulty grooming certain areas
Has a thick double coat
Is a senior cat
Has reduced flexibility or mobility
Has seasonal coat buildup

Many cats receiving Coat Decompression™ are not visibly matted. That is often when intervention is most valuable.

The TANDEM Cat® difference

Function first. Comfort always.

Our approach is not focused on making cats look different.

Our focus is restoring comfort, movement, airflow, and function. We evaluate how the coat is performing, how the skin is moving, and how the cat is interacting with its own body.

Because the best mat removal is the one that never becomes necessary.

Whether your goal is fewer hairballs, less shedding, improved comfort, or prevention of future matting, TANDEM Cat® Coat Decompression™ provides a proactive approach to feline coat health.
