TANDEM Cat® Clinical Grooming
TANDEM Cat® is the feline-only clinical grooming and handling model developed through Cats in the City after nearly two decades of working exclusively with cats. It was built for senior cats, fearful cats, medically complex cats, matted cats, reactive cats, overweight cats, disabled cats, and cats whose bodies need more support than ordinary grooming can provide.
Not ordinary grooming
TANDEM Cat® is the framework underneath our grooming, boarding, rescue, sitting, transportation, and clinical observation work.
Cats needed a care model built specifically for them.
Most grooming systems were designed around dogs. Cats are different. Their skin is thinner. Their stress responses are faster. Their bodies are more flexible, more fragile, and often less forgiving of force.
A cat who appears “difficult” may actually be communicating pain, fear, coat restriction, neurological change, arthritis, sensory overwhelm, or the accumulated burden of aging.
We begin with the body, not the haircut.
Every TANDEM Cat® grooming session is approached as a whole-cat care session. Our team looks for coat compression, matting, pelting, dandruff, skin changes, claw overgrowth, embedded claws, ear debris, hygiene decline, anal gland concerns, mobility limits, behavioral stress, and signs that a cat may be struggling to care for themselves at home.
The goal is not simply to make a cat look better. The goal is to restore comfort, mobility, hygiene, airflow, function, and quality of life.
The team absorbs complexity so the cat does not have to.
TANDEM Cat® uses a team-based handling model designed to reduce pressure on the cat’s body. Instead of expecting one person to restrain while another works, the team coordinates support, observation, positioning, timing, and de-escalation in real time.
This matters especially for cats who are elderly, painful, reactive, fearful, overstimulated, or medically fragile. The method underneath this work is TANDEM Touch™, a trauma-informed approach grounded in observation, communication, regulation, and trust.
Cats in the City was built around the cats who needed help most.
Many cats we serve have been turned away elsewhere, could not be completed in other settings, or were assumed to require sedation before grooming could be attempted.
Some cats do need veterinary care or medication support. But many cats can be helped awake when the right team, environment, tools, timing, and handling system are in place.
TANDEM Cat® was developed through thousands of real grooming cases, including cats with advanced matting, embedded claws, severe coat compression, geriatric decline, medical complexity, fear responses, and long-deferred hygiene needs.
For some cats, grooming is not vanity. It is maintenance care.
Many cats begin to lose grooming capacity as they age. This can happen because of arthritis, obesity, dental pain, kidney disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, neurological change, weakness, pain, or simple fatigue.
The signs may appear slowly: dandruff, clumping coat, greasy fur, matting near the hips, reduced flexibility, overgrown nails, odor, litter residue, or increased irritability when touched.
TANDEM Cat® helps identify and relieve these burdens before they become more severe.
A clinical grooming system, not a cosmetic shortcut.
Every cat arrives with a body, a history, a nervous system, and a threshold.
TANDEM Cat® begins there. Not with force. Not with assumptions. Not with cosmetics first.
With observation. With skill. With support. With the goal of helping the cat leave more comfortable than they arrived.
